The World of Kitchen Fairies

For the previous edition, go here.

"The world of kitchen fairies?" Bizzy repeated. She blinked several times, trying to breathe. "What?"

"Oh God, you've gone dumb again," Sprinkles sighed, smacking a spatula on her head. She rolled her eyes and repeated slowly, "Thissssss issssss theeee worrrrllllllddddd offf kitchennnn fairies. Like meeeee." She nodded slowly with a sarcastic grin plastered on her face, patting her chest. "Me kitchen fairy. You bad cook in bad situation."

Bizzy looked at Sprinkles. She blinked again. "Did you know we're the same size?"

Groaning, Sprinkles began to beat the spatula into her head. As Sprinkles was muttering curse words in nine different languages, Bizzy tried to take in everything around her. Fairies of all different colors and sizes flew around her, some on tablespoons, others on forks and one on the tail of a blender's extension cord that floated in the air like a blimp. Some fairies had hair that looked like stacks of potato chips while others wore intricate pretzel-like braids. One had a dress that looked like a coffee filter while another was as thin and straight as a rolling pin.

And if the fairies weren't unusual enough, the scenery was very...different. There was no sky or ground. White smooth walls curved around them, funneling toward the top where a blue circle lay overhead. Instead of trees and grass, mist swirled around like clouds peppered with lollipops, cupcakes and plateaus of blondies and brownies. Cookies hung overhead like stars in the sky, their sprinkles twinkling in the light. Below, a pathway of pies was bordered by rows of jellybeans up to a lush twelve-layer cake. A few fairies were bobbing in a sea of red liquid, while other fairies rode in scone boats with biscuits for paddles.

"This is the world of the kitchen fairies?" Bizzy asked, looking around in wonder.

Sprinkles snorted. "Well, it's not like the President lives here. There's no bowling alley."

"But where's the sky?" Bizzy asked, looking up at the strange blue circle. "Where's the grass? Actually, where's the stove and fridge? If you're kitchen fairies, shouldn't you live in a kitchen?"

Sprinkles made a face. "We have to spend our lives in a kitchen. Our world is the best part of the kitchen."

Bizzy looked at her blankly and Sprinkles sighed. "I keep forgetting you don't cook. The kitchen fairies live in an enchanted cookie jar."

"A cookie jar?" Bizzy repeated.

Sprinkles bobbed her head up and down with glee. "Can you imagine anything more awesome?" Bizzy's face flickered and Sprinkles scowled. "Don't answer that," she snapped. "Come on, we've got to get going."

"Go where?" Bizzy asked. "We just got here."

"And we don't have long." Sprinkles leaned close, glancing around to make sure none of the other kitchen fairies could hear. "Listen, there's an old rule of kitchen fairies we're going to invoke. To do that, we have to get to the Cookie in the Sky, where the Head Kitchen Fairy lives. If she agrees, you'll be saved for Thanksgiving dinner."

"What's the rule?" Bizzy gave Sprinkles a suspicious look as she squirmed and hid her eyes. "What is the rule?"

"The rule is that one human every century can have the powers of a kitchen fairy for one day," Sprinkles muttered.

Bizzy shrieked with glee and threw her arms around her. "That's wonderful! Oh thank you!"

"Don't get too excited," Sprinkles warned. "It's a big deal to be the only human to get granted this favor every century. In fact, it's really hard. You have to pass a test."

"That's no big deal," Bizzy said, tossing her hair behind her neck. "I'm great at tests. I was on dean's list on college."

Sprinkles shook her head. "It's not that kind of test."

Bizzy gulped. "You mean....."

Sprinkles nodded, her face pale. "It's a cooking test."

To be continued....

Stay tuned, Invisible Friends! This weekend, a tour of Christmas at the Pond. And next week, more whimsy, Twirl, Kitchen Magic and the second edition of the preview of my new book of Christmas tales coming next week!

Great job leaving us hanging, again! LOL! Thankfully I won't have to wait too long to find out how Bizzy does on her "test"!

Have a good one!

Is the test to see just how badly she does at cooking? Have a wonderful weekend, Duckie!

I want to live in an enchanted cookie jar. Or maybe an enchanted cheesecake springform pan.

Thanks for yesterday's (to me anyway, it's been a crazy week and I'm so far behind I think I'm first) TWIRL! I've got a sirloin tip roast, I'm trying this!

Can't wait for the follow up story.;)
That beef recipe looks to die for! BTW, my plastic chicken thinks your fuzzy duck is so beautiful his eyes popped out of his little head! Should we set them up on a blind date?

I'd like Kitchen Fairy powers please.

Come over for a Mexican lunch someday and then I'll bake you a pie for dessert.

Have a great weekend!

The world of the kitchen fairies sounds fabulous - lollipops and cuppies and brownies and blondies just hangin' around in the clouds - hey, they could never get me to leave.

Ver smooth and well written. AS I'm new to your blog, and so far only followed some beef recipes, is this part of a book you're writing? Also what age group? Sorry if you've already answered all these questions before. Just refer me to the right location.

Hey! I am so sorry it took me so long to answer the question you put up on my blog the other night! Body Pump is a weights based class that works on toning and strengthening the whole body. More info here:

Ahh, I hope that Bizzy passes the cooking test. It will be great if she is the one human chosen in this century to get kitchen fairy powers.

Have a good day,

It's me again! I left you a little present on my blog (at the end of the lasagna post). I know you have it already, but I'm sharing it anyway because I love your blog :-)

Ohhhh Duckie. This story just gets better and better. I can't wait to see what happens next!! I love the picture you have painted for us of Kitchen Fairy Land. It's just wonderful. I can picture them all buzzing about with candy sprinkles falling from their hair, some of the racier ones riding along on whirring egg beaters and whisks!! Simply wonderful!!! I started to write a little story this week. Would LOVE to talk to you about it!! Get your feedback.XXOO

Dear Blonde Duck:
How I've missed you. This morning I crept out of bed early, determined to read everything I've missed. I went backwards and started with your Dad's pecan birthday pie, smothered in cinnamon icing. Brilliant. I savored Vivi and Wade's first kiss, and the many more that followed. If there's one thing I love, it's a romance that seems impossible and that everyone is opposed to. Second to that, I love it when people hate each other to start, like Elizabeth Bennet and Darcy, Princess leia and Han Solo, Anne of Green Gables and Gilbert.... I loved reading about Mrs. McGill and her stew. I think it's amazing that you still visit her monthly. She seems like just the right kind of person to base a character on. And congratulations on your decision to self publish your books. You will keep us posted and let us know when we can buy. And who can forget my dear friend Ralph, who gummed butter as a baby and who's mother smells like butter and sugar like Mrs. Piggle Wiggle. And there are way too many Ms. Gunthers in the world. And then there's the new Prisilla Piper. I had a friend in college named Priscilla. It took me about a year to actually say her name. I couldn't do it. At first I just called her P. But now I love her name. It suits her and she is hilarious and so much fun and smart as the dickens-harvard law school after our undergrads. And by the way Muppet CC is one of my favorites too. It's not only hilarious, but actually so very sweet and touching and Michael Caine is brilliant, playing so seriously against all the crazy muppets. And one more thing. I loved reading what you were thankful for. I'm thankful for you too, and for your friendship and support and for your wonderful stories for me to enjoy with my Sailor girl. And one more thing I forgot, holy smokes, you got a kajillion and one awards while I was gone. Congratulations! I think this will be a record long comment.
