Ode to Office Parties and How I Love Thee (Seriously)

Ode to Office Parties and How I love Thee (Seriously)

They are the bane of the event world,
the pain in your calender,
the obligation you can't escape
and the unfortunate duty that comes with a paycheck.

However, I must declare my love for office parties,
And how I do love thee,
For even if I don't like my co-workers (except Libby),
Those random parties set me free.

You see, I work in a land of beige and grey,
pierced by cubicle walls and stale air conditioning,
with the most interesting cast of characters--
the cast of the "Office" ain't got nothing on me.

After listening to the personal phone calls,
the shrieks of despair and worry,
the non-stop political chatter,
the only highlight in one's workday,
is a brief break from the monotony.

And that, my friends, is why I love the office party.

Not only do I get to bake tasty treats,
But I get paid to eat them!
Whether it's someone's birthday, Christmas or Halloween,
I don't care how much my co-workers can annoy me,
I'm baking cookies!

Since not even an office party is worth a big plate of barbecue in my book,
at least if I'm paying, anyway,
I break out the old standard,
My trusty Rice Krispie Treats.

I mean, really, I have to really like someone to treat them to joy like this.

I think you'd be inclined to agree.

If I'm feeling particularly charitable,
or find myself drooling again,
I'll mix up a batch of Ben's famous oatmeal cookies,
and will consider sharing.

The best part about office parties,
is the personal spoils.
A plate of cookies,
A plate of krispies,
And a pink princess lunch box to hide them in. (Yes, that's my real lunch box. Yes, I take it to work. Don't judge me.)

Oh office parties,
And how I love thee.
You're the joy in my work,
And the reason I get to keep baking.

And after all, without you,
oh dear office party,
my work would be free of frivolity,
which is never a good thing.
Seriously.

Don't you agree, cookie stealing bunny?

Tomorrow, a new edition of Twirl! Then we have some chicken pot pie, a new Miss Pickles and a whimsical treat to start your weekend off right! Stay tuned!

I hadn't thought about office parties like that, but I'm beginning to see the light...getting paid to eat cookies!

I almost spit coffee all over my screen and keyboard when I saw the cookie stealing bunny! You're killing me. Oh Duckie, I look forward to visiting your blog and have missed you the past couple of days while I was gone. Man oh man it's good to be back.

LOL! That was cute. I'm not terribly fond of the guys I work with either but I won't let them ruin a good free meal for me.

If bring in some of my baked goodies I keep them in my office and only offer them up to the few I like. :p

Someone stop that cookie stealing bunny!

And everyone should have a pink princess lunchbox. Or the one I bought my oldest daughter in Kindergarten, which has squirrels in a tree, and says, "My family tree is full of nuts." Pink and perfect.

i would enjoy our office parties if someone other than me actually made something. unfortunately, the rest of the food comes straight from the supermarket shelves...
meanwhile, adorable bunny. :)

Carrying your lunch in a princess lunch box is a very eco-friendly thing to do.

My in-office parties are great. I love them and I love making stuff for them. We used to do Mardi Gras every year and I had a blast making Emerils Gumbo Ya Ya. It was a huge hit.

It's the out of office parties I don't like. The Christmas parties are so cliquey and you sit around and watch everyone get stinking drunk. I'm trying to come up wtih a good excuse not to go to my office Christmas party this year.

If that isn't just the CUTEST picture "cookie stealing bunny" that was hilarious! Loved this! We don't really do "office parties." We all make a dish and do an ornament exchange, but it's small office, so we don't need a big party.

As long as the office parties were during office hours they are great but after...no, no, no.

You are absolutely killing me! I love that you have a princess lunchbox and that you actually use it! I love that your bunny is eating cookies and I love your poem. You can come over anytime. Especially if you are really willing to do the dishes :)

Okay, I've resisted long enough. I can't hold back anymore because of this post!

When I worked in an office, (I now have my own business no more cubicles for me:) I worked nights. Not too many parties at night:( But, if I walked into work and someone said "how ya doin tonight?" and I said, "just Ducky," they knew I had a stash of baked goods or hot wings somewhere on my person. I kid you not!

P.S. LOVE the ode, the lunchbox, the bunny & the goodies...oh goodness, I LOVE this post!

You are the only woman that could pull of the princess lunchbox at work. Too funny. The cookies and the rice crispy treats look tasty.

I LOVE YOU! I adore your lunch box. I want me one of those! Not that I'd have anywhere to take it, but I could use it as a purse eh? Love the cookie recipe and I think that cookie stealing bunny is adorable! Duckie you are a joy to know and to count as a friend. XXOO a real treasure, and I'm so glad you're mine. I am hopelessly behind on e-mails and such. With all the work going on in the kitchen and everything else I have lost the plot! My boss has been a real beotch this week as well. I hope we get famous soon so I can tell her where to stuff it!

Oh my! Apple pie! said...

I love your lunchbox, it is cool. Not as cool as a cookie stealing bunny though.

You are hysterical with the bunny. I want to pet it and snuggle with it, even if it just a sock. He looks so cute! And nice lunch box. If you want help with the linky stuff email me your email address and we can go through it.

Oh Duckie, you don't know how lucky you are. We don't have office parties here. My boss celebrates Christmas with his family, but he doesn't even say "Merry Christmas" to us. We don't get together and have a Thanksgiving lunch or a Christmas celebration. Absolutely nothing. What do you think that does for morale? He doesn't see it.
